Senior Living Tour Checklist

Touring communities is a lot to take in, and it is easy to forget what you wanted to ask. Print this checklist, take it with you, and use one copy for each community you visit.

Community: Date visited:

A tour is designed to show a community at its best. These prompts help you see past the polish to how a place really runs.

First impressions

  • The community is clean, fresh, and well kept
  • It smells pleasant, with no lingering odors
  • Residents look engaged, comfortable, and cared for
  • Staff are warm and greet residents by name
  • The dining room and common areas feel welcoming
  • You can picture your loved one happy here

Questions to ask, with room for the answer

  • What is the staff-to-resident ratio, during the day and at night?
  • How long have the leadership team and care staff been here?
  • What happens if my loved one’s needs change over time?
  • May I see a week of menus, and may I eat a meal here today?
  • How are medications managed, and how are emergencies handled?
  • What does a typical day look like for a resident like my loved one?
  • How, and how often, do you communicate with families?
  • May I speak with current residents and their families?
  • What is included in the monthly fee, and what costs extra?
  • May I make an unannounced visit before deciding?
